Founding Myths

The narratives by which polities account for their own origins — Romulus and Numa, Lycurgus and the oracle, the Mandate of Heaven — and why the founding story does political work no chronicle could.

The story a polity tells about its own beginning

A founding myth is the narrative by which a community accounts for its own origin — and, in accounting for it, makes its present arrangements feel necessary rather than accidental. Rome had Romulus and the she-wolf, the fratricide, and the augury that settled the city's site; it had Numa receiving the religious law from the nymph Egeria. Sparta had Lycurgus and the Delphic oracle that sanctioned his constitution. China had the sage-kings of high antiquity and the Mandate of Heaven. The platform reads these not as failed history but as a distinct kind of political work — the work of making a beginning legible and authoritative after the fact.

Why the myth is load-bearing

The founding myth does something a sober chronicle cannot. A founding, by its nature, lacks prior authorisation — there is no constitution yet to make the founder legitimate, no settled law to make his law binding. The myth supplies, retrospectively, the legitimacy the founding could not supply for itself: it places the origin under divine sanction, or in continuity with a venerated past, or at the hands of a figure too extraordinary to be judged by ordinary measures. This is why the platform reads political legitimacy and founding myth as two sides of one structure. Plutarch, who knew perfectly well that the stories of Lycurgus and Numa were uncertain, told them anyway, "because the story is load-bearing."

Reading the myth without credulity or contempt

The platform's discipline here is exact: it neither takes founding myths as factual history nor dismisses them as mere propaganda. The historicity of Lycurgus is genuinely open; the she-wolf is plainly legend; the Mandate of Heaven is a theological-political doctrine, not an event. But the function of these stories is historical and real — they shaped how Romans, Spartans and Chinese understood what their polities were for and what bound them together. To read a founding myth well is to read it for what it did, not only for whether it happened.

Why it matters for Virtue & Power

Founding myths are where this cluster meets the platform's older theme of historical memory. A polity that remembers its founding in a particular way is, in part, governed by that memory. The platform reads the founding myth as one of the oldest instruments of institution-building: before there are durable offices, there is a durable story, and the story is often what the offices are built to honour.
