The exemplum
The classical world taught conduct largely through examples — the exemplum, the remembered figure or deed held up as a pattern to imitate or avoid. The platform reads historical examples as the form of instruction Plutarch raised to its highest pitch. A historical example is not a rule but a case: a particular person in a particular situation, acting well or badly, whose conduct the reader can weigh, remember and carry. The Roman tradition was saturated with such examples, and Plutarch gave the Greek and Roman past its richest single gallery of them.
Why the case beats the rule
The platform reads the classical preference for the example over the rule as a genuine claim about moral knowledge. Abstract rules tell you what to do in general; examples show you what virtue and vice actually look like in the texture of a life, where the hard cases live. Plutarch's wager is that a reader learns more about courage from watching how a particular man met a particular danger than from any definition of courage — and more about the failure of integrity from watching Cato's rigidity in action than from any maxim against inflexibility. The example carries the particularity that the rule abstracts away, and particularity is where conduct is actually decided.
The portable pattern
What makes the historical example powerful is that it is portable. A well-drawn example detaches from its original circumstances and becomes a pattern the reader can apply to situations Plutarch never imagined. This is how the Lives did their long work: a Renaissance prince, an English parliamentarian, an American founder could read the example of a Roman or a Greek and find in it a usable shape for his own conduct. The platform reads this portability as the engine of Plutarch's influence — the reason his figures kept being read as live counsel rather than dead history for fifteen hundred years.
